Under The Hood

The FireChicken's factory engine was a LG4, which is a 5.0L 305 cubic inch V8 with a 4-BBL throttle-body injection carburetor.  It has been completely rebuilt by Tony Marrs at Automotive Machine and Supply in Odessa.

Transmission

The factory transmission is the 700R4.  This tranny has been a favorite among performance vehicle owners for years. It can be built to perform easy shift changes for everyday driving as well as for supporting performance cars with 450 foot-pounds of torque.  The 700R4 has an automatic overdrive feature that allows cars with high rear-end gear ratios to be driven at highway speeds without problems.

Suspension & Chassis

After 25 years of wear, the Firebird suspension was still in pretty good shape.  Replacing the shocks and struts may or may not have been totally necessary.  Changing out the rotors, bearings, and brake pads was a good idea.  Doug and Danny at Forrest Tire gave some invaluable pointers. They also got to clean up the brake job done by another mechanic.

Interior

The original interior was General Motors Ox Grey and Charcoal.  I have stayed pretty much to code on all of the fabric items.  The revision has included replacement door and side sail panels, new dash cap, headliner, and visors.  A window regulator, bushings in the steering column, and trunk and hood lift supports were also replaced.

Exterior

The most noticeable of the body revisions is probably the GTA hood.  The new Victory Red colored paint is a little richer shade of red than the original.  The fresh silver color seems lighter.  Both hideaway/flip-up light are now consistently functioning properly.  Phoenix Graphix supplied the stripes and decals.
